Western Engineering Outreach
Western Engineering Outreach offers a variety of fun, hands-on programming for children and youth from Kindergarten to Grade 12 – ranging from in-school workshops to summer camps to weekend clubs to community events – designed to nurture curiosity, build skills and increase confidence in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Western Engineering Outreach additionally offers workshops and resources for educators to support their vital role in shaping the student experience. Our goal is to make STEM approachable and engaging for everyone. Each year, Western Engineering Outreach hires dedicated high-school and post-secondary student instructors who are passionate about sharing their love of STEM to deliver programs.

Responsibilities
This position is responsible for overseeing efficient and effective spring and summer outreach program operations, in collaboration with the Western Engineering Outreach Leadership Team, to provide community outreach and engagement opportunities to youth, community partners and teachers in the London & Middlesex Community. Western Engineering Outreach provides a pathway for youth to experience Western Engineering firsthand and start their journey to potentially becoming future students at Western University.
The Summer Programs Coordinator will have responsibility for carrying out activities which require higher level specialization of skills. The role will be responsible for providing support to faculty or staff, and for effectively carrying out a variety of tasks related to STEM outreach and the Discover Western Summer Camp in accordance with policies, procedures, and instructions received from their supervisor. The role will take guidance from their supervisor and work productively and courteously with the Outreach team and other members of the Western community. As part of the duties, the Summer Programs Coordinator may be required to run an off-site camp and stay overnight (e.g., Sarnia and/or other locations) or support the Western Engineering Summer Academy.
This role will support outreach program delivery, program administration and coordination, activity planning and activity development during May and June and support all aspects of summer camp and other outreach programming during July and August.
Qualifications
Education:
- 2 years of post-secondary education, and be a student returning to studies in the fall
- First Aid and CPR-C Certification required
- Preference for students studying Engineering, Science, Computer Science, Math, Education or Arts and Humanities
Experience:
- Experience facilitating summer camps or other youth recreation or outreach programs
- Previous student leadership experience and/or project management experience
- Experience with Western Engineering Outreach and/or summer camps preferred
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Ability to manage the day-to-day operations of outreach programs including summer camp
- Ability to coordinate logistics for camp registrations and deal with camp issues as they arise
- Ability to provide effective customer service to outreach program participants and their family members
- Ability to assist Outreach Coordinators in the planning and delivery of engaging programming from May through August including programs for children and youth under-represented in STEM
- Ability to develop and test age-appropriate STEM activities tailored to meet the needs and interests of local children
- Ability to lead the day-to-day tasks of summer staff in collaboration with the Outreach Leadership Team including scheduling
- Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
- Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule, including occasional evening and weekend shifts
- Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions
- Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
- Ability to follow detailed and/or complex processes and practices with high attention to detail
- Demonstrates integrity and works in accordance with Western’s policies and procedures with the ability to support others in following relevant policies and procedures
- Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
- Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, youth, students and the public
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Ability to support the creation of a positive, collaborative and supportive team culture
- Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements
- Comfortable running off-site camps with overnight stays if required
- Comfort with swimming if required
- Valid Class G or G2 driver’s license with access to a vehicle for travel
