Responsibilities

The Digital Communications Coordinator will be responsible for planning, coordinating, developing, and executing various web-based communication efforts and digital activities for the Faculty of Science. The role will conceptualize and produce creative web solutions to enhance user experience, and provide guidance regarding market research, information architecture, web project management, data analytics, usability, and web design. The role will plan, create and maintain unique content for websites and social media channels and will ensure appealing and impactful designs are developed that fit with the various Department’s goals and with the Faculty of Science’s marketing and branding strategies and guidelines. The role will also have responsibility for increasing the number of conversions to the Faculty’s websites, and engaging an increased number of individuals with digital communications.

Qualifications

Education:

-   Undergraduate Degree in a relevant discipline with courses completed in digital content creation and management and/or graphic design
-   Postgraduate certificate in website design and/or development would be an asset and preferred

Experience:

-   3 years of experience working in a communications and marketing role including copy writing, web design and working with digital methods, techniques and tools
-   Experience in an academic or post-secondary environment preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-   Familiarity with e-communication tools including website and graphic design principles and with social media platforms relevant to student populations
-   Demonstrated understanding of structure and function of websites, with AODA compliance, and other e-communication tools, with an ability to apply computer software for design and photo editing
-   Knowledge of theory and best practices in media relations and public affairs and with marketing trends and best practices
-   Familiarity with principles of writing, including grammar and style, argument, and coherence 
-   Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, with Adobe Photoshop, with content management systems (such as Cascade), and with project management software (such as Asana)
-   Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
-   Ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
-   Communication skills to engage audiences, with confidence interacting with individuals at all levels of an organization
-   Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
-   Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with public relations issues related to higher education
-   Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
-   Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
-   Interpersonal skills to liaise with prospective and current students, staff, faculty and other members of the Western community
-   Ability and propensity to use judgment and re-evaluate decisions when presented with new information
-   Multi-tasking skills to prioritize and consistently produce high-quality work within deadlines
-   Proven ability to build both formal and informal professional relationships within, across, and external to organizational boundaries
-   Team player with the ability to work collaboratively and actively contribute in meetings and in team settings
-   Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
