The base salary will be $66,350 - $86,200, per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

Responsibilities
The Communications and Marketing Specialist will be responsible for planning, coordinating, developing, and executing a variety of communication efforts for the Faculty of Science, with a goal of building and promoting Science's brand and reputation locally, nationally, and internationally. The role supports the development and implementation of strategic communication and marketing plans and assists with developing, maintaining, and assessing communication processes and practices, with a focus on positioning the Faculty and Western as one of Canada's leading research-intensive Universities. The Communication and Marketing Specialist facilitates the planning, creation and maintenance of unique content for websites and social media channels and ensures appealing and impactful designs are developed that fit with the Faculty of Science’s marketing and branding strategies and guidelines. The role will protect, promote, and enhance the reputation of the Faculty by providing professional advice and guidance regarding communication plans and related projects that is are consistent with all relevant University guidelines.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in Journalism/Media, Communications, Marketing or related field
- Post graduate diploma in communications, media studies, marketing, public relations or related program would be an asset
- International Association of Business Communicators Designation completed or in progress is preferred
Experience:
- 3 years of experience working in a marketing and communications role, successfully developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies, content, and projects in a dynamic environment
- Experience with digital communications (including copy writing, web design and working with digital methods, techniques and tools)
- Experience in an academic or post-secondary environment is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of communications and marketing best practices, processes, trends, and tools
- Demonstrated understanding of structure and function of websites and other e-communication tools including website and graphic design principles and with social media platforms relevant to student populations
- In-depth knowledge of principles of writing, including grammar and style, argument, and coherence and attention to detail, proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language
- Photography and videography skills with the ability to use photography and video editing software to tell a wide range of stories would be an asset (such as production planning, scripting, filming plans and related logistics)
- Ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
- Media skills with solid communications judgment to present and package information to maximize interest
- Compelling and persuasive communication skills to engage individuals and teams inside and outside the University
- Ability to analyze metrics and consider past communications to craft engaging written communications using social media or other appropriate channels
- Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
- Innovative and flexible critical thinking skills to adjust to and implement new processes or technology to the University’s advantage
- Demonstrated intercultural competency and knowledge of cross-cultural research and work practices
- Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with public relations issues related to higher education
- Ability to remain highly motivated, resilient, innovative, and collaborative when faced with challenges
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s events and activities
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, with Adobe Creative Suite, with content management systems (such as Cascade), and with project management software (such as Asana)
- Project management skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and perform well under pressure
- Interpersonal skills to liaise with prospective and current students, staff, faculty and other members of the Western community
- Multi-tasking skills to prioritize and consistently produce high-quality work within deadlines
- Ability and propensity to use judgment and re-evaluate decisions when presented with new information
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
