Job Description

About Us

At VidHug (https://vidhug.com), we enable anyone to create fun, visually-appealing, and meaningful group video messages to celebrate the people in their lives. This helps them stay connected to their loved ones over long distances or when getting together simply isn’t an option. We do so with a software platform that our users love because it is quick, easy to use, and produces a special and memorable surprise.

We are a small, growing startup, serving a large and engaged user base that has sent over 2 million video “hugs” around the world. The team is primarily based in London, Ontario, Canada, and works in a hybrid model of both remote and co-located team members. We are bootstrapped, profitable, and with plans to expand.

We often hear the phrases “tears of joy” and “best gift I ever received” from our customers. Working on a product that makes people feel loved and appreciated motivates us and we’re looking for people to share that sentiment.

The Role

You’ll join the team responsible for our group video creation platform, which helps our users both easily collect videos from people they invite and then turn those videos into a customized video montage in a 100% automated fashion.

The bulk of your time will be spent defining, implementing and testing improvements to our SAAS (Software-As-A-Service) platform, as well as troubleshooting any technical issues that may arise. Initially, your focus will be on our React front-end, but with opportunities to work across our full technology stack.

The size of our team dictates that all of us, occasionally, have to wear different “hats”. This includes, for example:

  • helping the support team with a technically-challenging ticket,

  • writing scripts that generate data and analytics for marketing purposes,

  • or performing some custom video work for a larger client.

If you enjoy working with a variety of technologies and are looking to expand your skill-set to include areas such as serverless and video processing, let’s talk!

About You

Do these qualities describe you? If so, we may be a good fit for each other.

  • You are productive independently, with minimal direction and supervision, but you don’t hesitate to ask for help or guidance when it’s called for.

  • You enjoy working as part of a team (technical and/or cross-functional) and proactively collaborating and communicating with other team members.

  • While you work best when focused on a single task, you also rise to meet the challenges of inevitable context switches and multitasking.

  • You are comfortable working remotely (e.g. from home) or in a co-located team

  • You prioritize quality over velocity, but generally deliver on-time or within your estimates

  • While you have deeper experience in some languages/frameworks over others, you lean towards being a generalist. You are not afraid to step outside of your comfort zone if it’s best for the problem at hand.

  • Even if follow-up QA testing is planned, you test your own code thoroughly and try to catch any and all bugs before you consider it “done”.

  • You find team success more satisfying than individual accolades.

Skills and Qualifications

For this position, we will consider a wide range of experience, from junior to senior. A degree or diploma in a computer science-related field is an asset, but not a requirement.

Required:

  • Experience (1 year minimum) working on a ReactJS application in a production environment

  • Comfortable creating new UI/UX

  • Development workflow using Git

  • Experience integrating with 3rd party APIs (e.g. Stripe)

  • Legally permitted to work in Canada

Nice-to-have (and things you will learn here):

  • Slack, GSuite, Google Docs, Trello

  • CSS, Bootstrap

  • Nodejs

  • npm, yarn, webpack

  • Serverless

  • AWS stack (Lambda, DynamoDb, etc)

  • Python

  • FFMPEG, video formats

  • Understanding of content delivery (streaming, CDNs)

  • Experience with code reviews (as author and reviewer)
