Responsibilities

The Technical/Research Support 1 will work

  1.  in the Head and Neck Translation research Lab and be responsible for cataloguing samples for the tumour bank.  As well, they will extract nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) from the fresh/frozen surgical samples.  They will also be responsible for extracting genomic DNA from whole blood patient samples or saliva samples.  The research support person will be trained in aseptic tissue culture techniques so that they can maintain our lab stocks of HNSCC and ATC cell lines. In vitro experiments using these cells may also be required. The support person will be trained for these requirements. 
  2.  Additional duties will include scanning pathology slides using an Aperio slide scanner, employing QuPath (or similar software) to estimate tumour cellularity and calculating numbers of infiltrating macrophages.


Qualifications 

Education:
-   Community College Diploma OR Undergraduate Degree in a related field/or in progress

Experience:
-   1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
-   Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
-   Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
-   Ability to follow processes with high attention to detail
-   Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
-   Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
-   Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
-   Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
-   Ability to collect and analyze data in an objective manner
-   Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues
-   Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals

-Ability to maintain accurate descriptions of procedures and cataloguing of biological research samples
