Start.ca is currently seeking a qualified GIS Technologist with excellent communication skills, a collaborative attitude and a strong commitment to safety to join our Fiber and Outside Plant team. Reporting to the Manager, the GIS Technologist will be responsible for providing GIS services related to the preparation, updating, and analysis of our digital mapping system and associated databases that are used to record the details of our fiber optic telecommunications network. bAlong with the responsibilities and requirements specific to this role, you are also expected to abide by and encourage Start’s Code of Conduct, helping to strengthen our trusting and positive work environment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare, maintain, update and manipulate and analyze the digital mapping and associated databases of the fiber optic network
  • Perform quality assurance/quality control tasks to ensure GIS data integrity and accuracy relating to the location and type of fiber optic cables, vaults, pole attachments, fiber optic splice closures and other outside plant details and residential and business addresses that can be served by the Start fiber optic network.
  •  Liaise with other departments to provide spatial data and analysis functions
  •  Provide content administration, data dissemination, documentation, spatial analysis, map productions, user training and support to the business areas
  •  Analyze data requirements, design logical and physical data models
  •  Work collaboratively with other team members
  • Respond to  GIS software application issues from the user community, troubleshoot problems and work with vendors as required to resolve issues
  •  Monitor and assess problem situations to identify root cause, gather and process relevant information, generate solutions and resolutions
  • Programming, coding and implementation of third party applications will be required
  •  Preparing drawings and designs=
  •  Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or equivalent
  •  3 - 5 years of experience and knowledge with developing GIS databases and maintaining GIS data with ESRI and/or Intergraph/Hexagon software. Working experience with GIS, ArcMAP, ArcFM is preferable
  •  Advanced knowledge of GIS tools and methodologies for administration of corporate GIS databases
  •  Advanced knowledge of SQL and Oracle database
  •  Advanced knowledge of iOS and Android operating systems
  •  Experience with AutoCAD software
  •  Experience with presentation and graphic design tools for the production of professional quality mapping output products
  • Strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
  •  Proven analytical and problem solving abilities; including experience creating analytical based reporting.
  •  Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Prior experience in fiber design is an asset
