Position: Database Administrator, Corporate Support and Continuous Improvement Branch, Corporate Services Division
Start Date: To be determined
Status: Temporary, Full Time (1)

Salary: $104,805 (Starting) to $122,642 (at 30 months)                                  

Position Summary:  
The Database Administrator provides operational and development support for the database environments in the Business Analytics Unit (BAU) by tracking and resolving database related incidents and requests, performance tuning, backups, patching, implementing, and maintaining database security and identifying security vulnerabilities.

Responsibilities: on Description
  • Provide consultation related to analysis, technology, and business process optimization to the London Police Service (LPS) Senior Management.
  • Conduct specialized, data-driven analysis and provide findings and recommendations.
  • Design, build, develop, support, and maintain all LPS databases, and all database processes, scripts, and jobs.
  • Manage the administration of Microsoft SQL databases.
  • Support the Business Analytics Unit (BAU) with implementing the extract-transform-load (ETL) processes to acquire the necessary data for the development of reports, dashboards, and other outputs for end users.
  • Assist in long term planning of data architecture, data acquisition, and decision support systems for Business Analytics across all areas and levels of the LPS.
  • Evolve the creation of software and other technologies for data collection, analysis, and reporting to be used for strategic decisions.
  • Develop data quality standards and processes for data entry, governance, and correction in consultation with Senior Management.
  • Utilize programs and report generation tools (T-SQL, SSIS, SSRS, Informix, MDX, DAX, Power BI, etc.) to drive data analysis and support business processes.
  • Create documentation and lead training on new programs and processes.
  • Liaise with management and staff to evaluate the ongoing effectiveness of new Business Analytics programs and business processes in fulfilling intended objectives.
  • Collaborate with the LPS Information Technology Branch to ensure Business Analytics related hardware and software is redundant, secure, and up to date.
  • Develop and implement back-end database changes to processes, procedures, and functions.
  • Create physical database or other data storage designs, enable query executions, and test preliminary designs.
  • Develop the database connectors to external data sources, including implementing concepts such as data virtualization and data federation.
  • Support, monitor, and control LPS database development environments to ensure compliance with database and application development best practices.
  • Install and test new databases, applications, and other LPS software before promotion to production, and plan and execute the migration of data.
  • Design, develop, and implement workflow and technical processes for automation of data flows between data sources, marts, and analytic tools.
  • Implement database back-up routines, schedules, and similar processes to recover from backups in the event of catastrophic loss.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the organization on data, business practices, and related technologies and oversee technical and professional projects.
  • Research and recommend database technologies and techniques including data marts and warehouses to address business, information, security, privacy, performance, and application requirements.
  • Coordinate and support upgrades, migrations, implementations, and resolutions.
  • Other duties as assigned within the core competencies.

Requirements
  • 3-year Diploma in Computer Science/ Data Analytics, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
  • SQL Server certification and Business Analysis Certification an asset.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in database administration or a related field.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, judgement, and ingenuity required to develop guidelines, policies, applications, and solutions of a specialized nature.
  • Excellent communication skills required for regular contact with all levels of the organization to give, obtain and/or exchange, and/or discuss technical information or decisions requiring discussion or explanation to ensure full understanding, with tact, self-control, and persuasiveness.

Benefits/Pension:
Temporary members receive ten percent (10%) of their hourly rate in lieu of benefits (after 120 calendar days) and are also eligible to join the OMERS Pension Plan upon their first day of hire.

Hours of Duty:
Day shift; Monday-Friday
