You are excited about working with business leaders and academic partners to co-create a new approach to innovation – one that applies systems thinking. You value new ideas and want to be part of a team that will mobilize those ideas to create real change.

You are an exceptional multi-tasker, able to ensure multiple projects are completed on time and with impeccable quality. You are a strong team player and leader, who can motivate a loosely coupled team of people with diverse backgrounds. You are an exceptional communicator, comfortable speaking with diverse audiences, from researchers to senior executives. You are innovative and creative, and like to work with others who want to create something new and powerful together. Finally, you have a strong attention to detail, but can still see the big picture and what is important.

As Project Management Specialist, you will be responsible for planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of projects that apply the Innovation North Compass, a corporate systems innovation tool co-developed by Innovation North and its Practice Partners. You will work with project teams to ensure deadlines are being met and to help them unlock any challenges they might face along the way. You will always have an eye on how each team can be doing things better and apply these best practices across projects. Ultimately, you will help to shape and position Innovation North as a global social movement that brings together business, academia, government, and civil society to solve wicked problems.

What you’ll do:

Project Management

  • Lead the execution of projects with Practice Partners of The Innovation North Lab, who are senior innovation and sustainability executives at large Canadian corporations
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to develop project management plans, including detailed budgets, clear project scopes, milestone deadlines, project teams, and a final deliverable
  • Coordinate and regularly check-in with each project team, which is made-up of a research lead (a faculty member), supported by post-doctoral or doctoral fellows, and research assistants
  • Communicate regular status updates and coordinate meetings with partners and other stakeholders, recognizing the appropriate frequency based on the project
  • Oversee the Research Ethics approval process for each project (if required) by coordinating the drafting and submission of research protocols, ensuring timely resubmissions, and completing annual reviews
  • Maintain data (e.g. research documents, video recordings) across projects that complies with Ivey and Western’s IT requirements for safe and secure storage of research data
  • Monitor each project to ensure it is being completed on time, on budget, and according to the project management plan
  • Prepare monthly updates for faculty leads on each project’s resource use, upcoming milestones, and estimated time to completion
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to adjust each project’s work plan and manage changes to scope, budget and timelines as needed
  • Facilitate debriefs at the end of each project to identify recommendations and best practices for continuous improvement across projects
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to draft and maintain website content related to each project’s methodologies and outcomes

Research Staff & Grant Management

  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to identify resource gaps by interviewing, hiring, and managing research assistants as required
  • Resolve issues brought forward by research assistants and other team members by coaching them on professional communication, writing and research skills, each project context, and reinforcing Innovation North’s culture
  • Support training and skills development of individual team members and teams as a whole
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to identify and prepare grant applications for projects from research funding organizations such SSHRC, Mitacs, Western Research, and foundations
  • Lead the monitoring, completion and timely submission of reporting for grant requirements

What you have:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social sciences, business, environmental studies, or related field
  • At least 1-2 years experience managing multiple client-facing projects or programs within a corporate or institutional setting
