About Us

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) is one of four departments in the Faculty of Engineering. Faculty and staff in the department support and foster the educational and research pursuits of undergraduate and graduate engineering students, while providing the best student experience.

Responsibilities

The Technical Specialist will work under the direction of a Research Engineer, and in collaboration with the Principal Investigator, to support their research activities in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The role will be responsible for providing hands-on technical support, troubleshooting and assistance with the implementation and testing of embedded software/hardware for different communication modules and the gateway device of a wireless based communication network system, as instructed by the Research Engineer. The Technical Specialist provides assistance with performance analysis, performance testing, drafting documentation for the developed system related to the research as required.

Qualifications

Education:

-    3 year Community College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Systems Technology or related discipline
-    Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering/Computer Science or related discipline is preferred

Experience:

-    1 year of technical hands-on experience with embedded system software/hardware design and implementation in a related academic research environment
-    Experience with embedded systems, embedded software, embedded software, implementation, testing and debugging

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-    Knowledge of wireless communication systems
-    Familiarity with gateway devices and multiple communication modules including short range wireless with IEEE802.15.4, acoustic, cellular, and satellite, as well as different wired BUS communications
-    Understanding different wireless protocols such as LoRa, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, MQTT, IEEE802.15.4 etc.
-    Ability to implement, test and debug embedded software/hardware using microcontroller/chips including STM32, CC1310 and CC1312, and in RS485, RS232, CAN and SPI buses
-    Understanding PCB design and ability to work with Altium designer 
-    Communication skills to listen to the complete message, solicit more information as required, and provide feedback 
-    Verbal and written communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and technical personnel
-    Ability to creatively adapt traditional methods, concepts, models or systems to new applications
-    Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions or recommendations
-    Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
-    Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
-    Ability to work in a fluid and evolving work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
-    Ability to take responsibility for own work and ensure that deadlines are met and outcomes are achieved
-    Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
-    Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software, applications or equipment that achieves required outcomes for the research
-    Ability to be forward thinking, anticipate possible errors, and take preventative measures
-    Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
-    Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
-    Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
-    Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve goals of the research team
-    Familiarity with University policies and procedures related to research protocols
