Fibre Optics Splicer

The Fibre Optic Splicer is responsible for the delivery of fibre projects by completing fiber optic splicing at splice closures in the field, patch panels and fiber jumper locations within the Start.ca Data Centre or Optical Line Termination (OLT) locations. . The Fibre Optic Splicer plans and executes the fiber splicing work by correctly reading and interpreting , fiber optic plans, splice drawings, and technical specifications and ensures quality and timely deliveries of fibre services to residential and business customers. Along with the responsibilities and requirements specific to this role, you are also expected to abide by and encourage Start’s Code of Conduct, helping to strengthen our trusting and positive work environment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviewing and interpret  fiber optic plans and splice package drawings,  and complete work within assigned timeframes..
  • Prep and splice fiber optic backbone and distribution cables which could include: ( Butt splicing and mid-span FOSC’s. Splicing in splitters. Splicing distribution and backbone cables into fibre patch panels and ODF’s, Splicing riser cables in condo/apartment buildings or large office buildings).
  • Read, follow, and verify splice drawings, making notes of any changes.
  • Complete and return “as-built” splice records to office or input directly to electronic data base at time of splicing.
  • Complete end to end OTDR and power meter light source testing.
  • Complete cross connects for the PON and “Active E” circuits at the OLT cabinets.
  • Build and configure new OLT cabinets.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on the OLT cabinets and equipment which could include:
  • o Installing and changing new/failed line cards.
  • o Filter changes.
  • o Battery maintenance.
  • o Installing SFP’s.
  • Perform emergency restoration of any broken or damaged fiber cables with the network.
  • Drive company vans and splicer trucks.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following all required Federal and company guidelines, codes, standards, and legal requirements that may be applicable.
  • Other appropriate responsibilities relevant to the role today and the role as it may evolve.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field or technical training (i.e. CFOT).
  • Knowledge and/or Experience using fibre optic troubleshooting tools (i.e. OTDR, Mass Fusion Splicing, etc.).
  • Knowledge of fiber optic cabling and physical infrastructure and comfortable with optical line terminals (OLT).
  • Knowledge of network technology, maintenance practices and procedures, coupled with strong knowledge of fiber optic “outside plant”.
  • Able to read and interpret all types of fiber optic drawings, splice packages, and/or documents.
  • Able to identify problems and situations, take appropriate action, implement solutions or escalate as required.
  • Self-disciplined, motivated, and organized.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and passionate about delivering an exceptional customer experience.
  • Available and willing to be on-call for emergency restorations.
  • Valid G level driver’s license and able to provide a driver’s abstract to meet CVOR requirements.
  • Health and Safety certifications in Working at Heights, Book 7 - Work Area Protection, First Aid, and WHMIS an asset (note that all certifications are required for this position, but would be provided as part of training).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to safely lift and carry items weighing 70lbs or more.
  • Able to safely maneuver, set up, and use a 30ft extension ladder.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Repetitive motions for prolonged lengths of time may be required.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • May be required to work at night or early mornings if dealing with an emergency restoration.
  • May be required to be on-site for emergency restoration activities.
