About Us
The Department of Biology is the largest academic unit within the Faculty of Science. Throughout the academic year, the Department provides courses to over 10,500 students annually, has approximately 1400 majors and an average graduate enrollment of 140 - 160 students. The major foci within the department is namely scientific research, graduate, undergraduate and public education. The Department seeks to find a better working balance between the development and strengthening of its research enterprise and the maintenance of its strong undergraduate program seeking to enhance and strengthen its graduate program and make meaningful contributions to existing and future collaborative programs that fall within its sphere of influence and interest. The Department is housed in six main buildings (B&GS, WSC, Collip, NCB, AFAR, and Biotron).

Responsibilities
The Beekeeper will be responsible for maintaining a research apiary on Western University main campus. The incumbent will maintain, replace or purchase equipment on a need-to basis, order and administer feed and supplies, including medications, according to Ontario Beekeeper Association (OBA) guidelines, and occasionally help set up hives in a manner needed to conduct tests and experiments.

The incumbent may get stung, need to lift heavy objects, and will ideally have a vehicle suited to beekeeping. There is an expense account to cover operation costs, including mileage if necessary. The successful candidate would have demonstrated expertise in beekeeping. They would become a member of the Thompson Lab in the Department of Biology and would have opportunity to contribute to meetings and become involved in outreach and media communications.

Qualifications

Education:

-   Undergraduate Degree or College Diploma (or in progress) in a relevant field (Biology, Environmental Science, Commercial Beekeeping or Apiculture, etc.).

Experience:

-   1 year of work experience in beekeeping

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

-   Ability to work outside independently in an apiary with live bees

-   Ability to occasionally lift or move honey 'supers' (bee boxes; ~18-20 kg)

-   Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work

-   Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
