Who is a Product Owner?

The Product Owner is responsible for defining, designing, and driving the development and management of the features and functionality of the products and services within their assigned portfolio. This cross-functional position plays a vital role on a product scrum team, and is accountable for creating and implementing differentiated digital product and service strategies, pilots, and offerings to best position the company. Working closely with members of the technology department and business leaders from across GoodLife, this individual focuses on creating and executing a plan that will bring the long-term vision for the selected products and services to life. The Product Owner works closely with the scrum team to review user stories, make key decisions, negotiate trade-offs, ensure delivery of business value, and provide ultimate acceptance of developed features end to end. They support readiness and adoption strategies to ensure successful delivery to market, apply critical thinking to solve complex customer problems, and ensure adherence to budgets. The Product Owner cares passionately about GoodLife’s Members and Associates, the actual customers of their products, and through frequent engagement they develop a deep understanding of usage patterns and user experience. They are customer-obsessed leaders for their customer-facing digital products and services and are accountable for their success.

 

What will you be doing?

  • Develops product strategy and defines product roadmaps based on an integrated understanding of customer behavior, company strategy, and anticipated market trends.
  • Champions the customer’s viewpoints by gathering and analyzing feedback from multiple touch points in order to optimize and ensure a superior customer experience.
  • Manages multiple products while facilitating the development of new features and functionalities. Acts as a key partner with assigned lines of business to understand high level business goals and relative priorities. Collaborates with business operations to assist in the detection, diagnosis and resolution of defects as they relate to owned products.
  • Works within an agile product delivery model and drives the scoping for product improvements including development of business cases, supporting metrics, business requirements, and product specifications.
  • Supports user acceptance testing and supports go-to-market planning in order to gain successful customer engagement and product adoption.
  • Reviews product regularly and has the authority to accept or reject features or changes.
  • Working alongside analytical team partners, ensures success measurement plans are executed and outcomes are communicated to the necessary stakeholders.
  • Writes narratives, use cases, user stories and requirements to enable the product planning process.
  • Delivers quality documentation including customer journeys, use cases and technical diagrams.
  • Develops, monitors, evaluates and standardizes key metrics and product analytics to improve technical (performance, reliability, scalability) and customer / business performance, fostering a culture of data-driven decisions across internal stakeholder groups
  • Participates in regular agile ceremonies with product scrum team
  • Prioritizes feature list items from the product backlog to suit business needs whilst considering development capacity.
  • Manages the support process from root cause analysis to resolution in order to address bugs and identified gaps. Regularly reviews and maintains written documentation to ensure products are functioning as designed, accurate information is being presented, system issues are properly reported, and product releases are properly tested prior to a production release.

 

Do you have what it takes?

  • Bachelor’s degree, post-secondary, or accreditation required; education concentrated in business or technology fields are preferred.
  • Certified Software Product Owner or equivalent certification
  • Minimum 3 years of experience taking on end-to-end product ownership and successfully delivering results in a dynamic and complex environment.
  • 3+ years of quantitative skills with the ability to link product design and features to strategic objectives while using hard data and metrics to substantiate assumptions and recommendations.
  • 2+ years of experience developing products in an agile environment
  • Thorough understanding of agile software development methodologies, values, and procedures
  • Understanding of digital technologies (e.g. HTML, CSS, SaaS platform architecture, RESTful services)
  • Experience with capturing technical documentation (e.g. process mapping, diagrams)
  • Advanced knowledge of product management, business analysis and software development lifecycle
  • Extremely strong problem-solving skills; ability to quickly translate customer opportunities into product and technology dependencies.
  • Able to break down customer “jobs to be done” to product components, features, and technologies that are flexible, built on re-usable, flexible microservices that are logical for the overall design of the technology stack.
  • Proven ability to drive projects forward and ability to effectively communicate progress and/or barriers to Scrum Master and stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing business priorities and a strong work ethic.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact with stakeholders and business partners across the organization at various levels, including ability to discuss controversial subjects with all levels and areas of the organization requiring tact and a commitment to finding common ground.
  • Strong strategic thinking; is able to translate the company’s strategic direction into a robust strategy for owned products.
  • Deep empathy for customers, values designing user-centric experiences, specific to true consumer needs based on consumer insight and data.
  • Extremely organized, detail-oriented individual who is capable of self-managing and multi-tasking in a fast paced, demanding environment.
