About Us

The Faculty of Health Sciences is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centres. The faculty has more than 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students).

Responsibilities

The Digital Design Specialist will create new digital health solutions to support users of the Musculoskeletal Health Innovation Factory (MSK-IF) that benefit patients with MSK health problems. The Specialist will consult on projects selected by the Operations Committee and will design, develop, pilot and monitor technical and digital solutions in consultation with project teams, with the goal of creating accessible, useable and useful solutions for managing MSK health problems. The Specialist will also engage with project teams that include end-users and the researchers connected with MSK-IF to determine best solutions for challenging MSK problems, develop, test, and refine those solutions, and working with an expert in user technology, will prepare effective innovations for translation into practice.

Qualifications

Education:
-    College diploma or Undergraduate degree in any related technical field (e.g. engineering or computer science)
-    Graduate degree in Engineering, computer science, machine learning or artificial intelligence preferred

Experience:
-    3 years' experience in the design and development of digital, sensorized, electronic or virtual reality applications
Preferred:
-    Previous experience with computer algorithms/languages, application of sensorized devices, smart materials/devices; gaming applications to health, virtual reality applications
-    Training and experience in the design of health applications
-    Proficiency in multiple technical platforms/systems and design options (e.g. computer languages/platforms, sensors, Arduino)
-    Previous experience using coding languages (e.g. Python, C, C+, C#, Java) 
-    Experience facilitating technical design with health teams

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-    Able to translate clinical measurement or interventional goals into app, sensorized, virtual reality, or other digital health solutions 
-    Ability to explore, identify, implement software and hardware solutions
-    Proven ability to use stimulus and game development software effectively
-    Ability to interface multiple components together to design and implement solutions
-    Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
-    Self-starter who takes initiative and ensures that outcomes meet goals and expectations
-    Attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance
-    Project management skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and perform well under pressure
-    Effective integration of the technical and useability aspects of the innovations
-    Demonstrated ability to apply creativity, innovation, and resourcefulness to daily work
-    Ability to adapt prototypes based on user feedback/useability analysis 
-    Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines  
-    Ability to multi-task and support a positive work environment
-    Able to provide guidance and support to clinical teams on the optimal digital/engineering approaches
-    Computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and database management, social media platforms, and presentation tools software
