Project Accountant

We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic individual to join our Finance team as a Project Accountant. This is a finance role designed to support Project Managers through the life of a project.

As part of our Corporate Finance team and reporting to the Controller, the Project Accountant oversees all aspects of Project Accounting for each project assigned and interfaces closely with Project Managers and Finance Business Partners to maintain the financials for each project. This is a hybrid position, reporting to our London Ontario head office.

The Project Accountant, as a senior specialist with advanced applied knowledge, is responsible for supporting the professional services order to revenue accounting cycle, by providing services contract administration and data maintenance for Professional Services projects.

Reporting initially to the Controller, the Project Accountant will partner with our Project Management team and Finance Business Partners to ensure the successful financial management of projects, including project setup, maintenance, invoicing, and project closure, as well as continuous improvement initiatives with regards to working capital management and partnering with our PMO Office and our Finance team to continually improve our key working capital metrics by project.

What would a typical day be like?

• Financial management of time and material and fixed price projects, which includes but is not limited to contract and change request management, project setup, master data maintenance, invoicing, and project closure.
• Complete monthly project financial procedures including revenue recognition and support timely and accurate invoice creation
• Ensure consistent application of approvals and control procedures.
• Monitor project budgets, change orders, project health and estimates
• Build strong relationships with our internal Professional Services business partners, including Delivery and Project Managers.
• Identify risks to project status or completion and escalate to leadership as appropriate
• Support resolution of contract issues including providing support to the billing team as required.
• Support service sales team in creation of statements of work and change requests.
• Effectively work with colleagues across Finance and other key internal and external stakeholders.
• Support internal review process and year end audit requests

What qualifies you for this opportunity?

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with a minimum of 3+ years Project or Professional Services Accounting
• Experience in Engineering consulting industry highly desired
• Proven experience managing medium to large scale projects with changing scope, timelines, and consultants
• Experience with ERP and project accounting systems, Deltek Vision and Salesforce an asset
• Requires excellent 360-degree communication skills and the ability to multitask
• Client focused, always striving to give clients the best solutions
• Strong commitment to innovation by creating new and better ways to solve clients’ toughest challenges
• High levels of integrity, always doing the right thing in an ethical, fair, and sustainable way.
• Demonstrated experience of collaboration in a diverse and inclusive team, working together toward technical excellence
• Willingness to work extended hours at month end and year end
• Experience with Percentage of Completion accounting required
• Thorough knowledge of Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
• Knowledge of US GAAP considered an asset
• Knowledge of public company reporting/SOX controls considered an asset
• Highly proficient in Excel and the Microsoft Suite of products
• Reliable transportation and an ability to travel; Controls Specialists at JMP should have the ability to travel within the US and Canada
