Tooling Engineering Manager

About the job

As a member of our Product Development team, you will provide leadership and support to the design, development, and manufacture of injection moulding tooling for medical devices. Apply deep knowledge and experience in tooling to analyze and optimize tooling and component design process. Manage all injection moulding tooling assets and resolve manufacturing issues to ensure optimal operational performance.

 

Responsibilities Include:

Design and Development

  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and expertise to internal cross functional product development teams and our suppliers to ensure tooling design requirements and project deliverables are met
  • Lead tooling design reviews to ensure tools meet TMI requirements so that design and project risks are mitigated at an early stage in development
  • Complete engineering simulations to predict as early as possible issues with tooling design, part design, and/or material selection
  • Stay abreast of new plastics technology innovations and propose for implementation where appropriate including tooling, polymers, and moulding.
  • Develop and maintain a healthy external network that can be leveraged to advance departmental and TMI priorities
  • Provide training and transfer knowhow to New Product Development staff and other internal stakeholders so that we consistently develop and manufacture innovative, high quality, and low cost plastic medical devices
  • Coach and mentor New Product Development staff to ensure base level proficiency in plastic part design is achieved

 

Continuous Improvement

  • Improve TMI’s competitiveness in the marketplace by applying the latest continuous improvement tools and techniques to improve tooling, moulding processes, and devices
  • Fulfill the role of project leader for all tooling cost reduction projects from concept phase to formal change project initiation
  • Facilitate effective transfer of all approved cost reduction projects to formal change control and New Product Development process
  • Manage all cost reduction concept development projects to ensure agreed upon deliverables are achieved and provide regular communication updates to key stakeholders on status
  • Develop a robust pipeline of innovative tooling related cost reduction ideas and drive their progression towards selection for development
  • Work with internal QA, Operations, and our suppliers to establish and measure against continuous improvement objectives

 

Operational Effectiveness

  • Working with suppliers, define, measure, and optimize all injection moulding tooling operational performance targets (OEE, quality, cost, etc)
  • Contribute to annual tooling budgets and plans for both New Product Development and Operations
  • Via regular supplier visits and audits, continuously inspect the health of our tooling investments to ensure suppliers are reporting accurately
  • Provide regular tooling status reports that capture the operational effectiveness, of all TMI injection moulding tooling to stakeholders
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and expertise to internal production support teams and our suppliers to ensure tooling related manufacturing issues are resolved quickly, effectively, and within budget
  • Working with production support teams and our suppliers, proactively seeking to capture and apply learnings from root cause analysis that can prevent similar issues in the future
  • Ensure knowhow gained from manufacturing is captured and transferred to New Product Development to continually ensure our designs are optimized for manufacturing

 

Health and Safety

  • Comply with relevant health and safety legislation, including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.

 

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Tool Design, Mechanical Technician, or Mechanical Engineering Technician or a related field of study
  • 10-15 years of experience in Operations or Design and Development of injection molding tooling for high volume manufacturing
  • Proven technical and project management experience including planning and execution of multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven leadership and demonstrated ability to influence cross functionally within an organization to drive results
  • Advance knowledge of plastics, processing, costing and the design of high volume injection molded tooling and components
  • Advanced ability to design high volume injection moulding tooling
  • Advanced ability to root cause and resolve manufacturing issues with injection moulding tooling, plastic or rubber parts, and processes
  • Advanced ability to design plastics parts and tooling components using 3D CAD, e.g. Solidworks
  • Advanced cost modelling experience of plastic parts and tooling
  • Intermediate ability to perform mold simulation tools, e.g. Moldflow
  • Advanced project management skills
  • Advanced cross functional leadership capability including experience leading across technical, project, and business areas
